Jack Nelson Purcell was born in Ballarat and was an Iron Turner when he enlisted in the March 1917 Reinforcements on 15 November 1916 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A74 Marathon on 10 May 1917. According to his digitised record he completed his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury, returning to Australia aboard the Keiser-a-Hind from England on 6 may 1919.
