Biography

Wilton Edgar Trompf was born in Beaufort, Victoria, was single and a Grocer's assistant living in Ballarat South when he enlisted with the 59th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 17 November 1916 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 16 December 1916, disembarking at Plymouth on 18 February 1917. Aside from absenting himself without permission on one occasion and a brief stay at hospital for illness, he completed his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury, proceeding overseas to reinforce the 58th Battalion on Christmas Eve 1917 and returning home to Australia on 15 May 1919.
