Arnold James Smith was born in Port Fairy, but enlisted from Ballarat East on 21st November 1916. He was a 22 year old, unmarried carpenter. He joined the 37th Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 3136. On the 4th October 1917 he was killed in action at Broodseinde. His name is on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
