Biography

Arnold James Smith (SN 3136) was born in Port Fairy but attended Ballarat’s Queen Street State School. He enlisted in Ballarat on 21st November 1916. He was a 22 year old, unmarried carpenter. He joined the 37th Infantry Battalion, embarking from Melbourne on February 19th 1917. On the 4th October 1917 he was killed in action at Broodseinde, has no known grave, and his name is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
