William Lavers Prowse was born in Ballarat and was a Linotype Operator by trade when he enlisted in the June 1917 Reinforcements on 25 November 1916 at the age of 26. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on 9 November 1917. In June 1918 he transferred from the Medical Corps to the Australian Corps Cyclist Battalion with whom he was serving when he contracted influenza in early September. He was evacuated to the 1st Birmingham War Hospital in England and did not return to France. He returned to Australia on the Orontes and disembarked at Melbourne on January 30th 1919.
