Born in Creswick, Victoria, William Lionel Bell was a single 18 year old driver at the time of his enlistment on the 14th of December 1916 in Melbourne, Victoria under the alias of Henry James Bell.
His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 19th of February 1917.
On the 1st of October 1917, William was wounded in action. He rejoined his battalion on the 9th of October.
On the 12th of August 1918, William signed a statutory declaration stating that he had enlisted under an alias, and William Lionel was his true name.
William returned to Australia on the 17th of February 1919, and was discharged due to the termination pf his enlistment period on the 19th of March 1919.
