William Reed was born in Ballarat East, was single and a Nurseryman living in Hurst Bridge, Victoria when he enlisted in the 6th Battalion, B Company on 19 August 1914 at the age of 30. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 19 October 1914. In May 1915 he was wounded in the shoulder (right scapula) and remained hospitalised until August. He was admitted to hospital on 4 November 1916 for trench feet and was again wounded in action with a gunshot wound to both thighs on 23 September 1917. He returned to Australia aboard the Durham Castle on 10 March 1918.
