William Reed (SN 241) born at Ballarat, was a 20 year old nurseryman when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 19th 1914. Assigned to the 6th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Hororata on October 21st and sailed to Egypt. He was wounded in the historic Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915 and evacuated to hospital at Malta then Egypt. He recovered and moved to France in 1916 but was evacuated in November suffering from trench feet. In March 1917 he was transferred to the 65th Battalion and in September he again suffered severe wounds to his legs which caused him to be returned to Australia aboard the Durham Castle. He reached Melbourne on May 10th 1918 and was discharged medically unfit on July 31st.
