Frederick James Whykes (SN 7337) born in Ballarat, was a 26 year old tram conductor when he enlisted in Melbourne on November 30th 1916. Posted to the 5th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ballarat on February 19th 1917. He sailed first to England and then to France in October 1917. He avoided battle wounds, but health issues troubled him from mid-1918. He was returned to Australia aboard the Gaika and was discharged ‘medically unfit, nephritis’ on February 8th 1919.
