Biography

Charles Edward Lucas (SN 1161) was born in Ballarat, and after his father was killed in a mining accident, he spent several years in the Ballarat Orphanage. He was educated at Dana Street State School. He enlisted on September 21st, 1914 as a 27-year-old blacksmith. He joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne on December 22nd on board the Themistocles. He survived the Landing at Anzac Cove, but on May 8th 1915 he was killed in action at Krithia. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Helles Memorial on the southern tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula.
