Claud Victor Sior (SN 18320) was born in Ballarat and was a 29 year old watchmaker when he enlisted on December 28th 1916. He embarked aboard the Port Sydney on May 9th 1917 and sailed to Egypt. He undertook signals training until September 1917 when he was posted on duty with the Desert Mounted Corps. He was troubled by illness during his service but avoided battle wounds. When the war ended he was granted two months leave to study at the British Optical Institute before returning home aboard the Cape Verde, disembarking on February 26th 1920. He was discharged on May 16th 1920 but enlisted again in WW2.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Claude V. Sior
