George Leonard Whitehand (SN 34142) born at Learmonth, was a 25 year old grazier when he enlisted in Melbourne on January 3rd 1917. On May 11th he embarked aboard the Ascanius and sailed to England. His early months in England were interrupted by a lengthy period in the Bulford Hospital. In June 1918 he crossed to France to serve as a driver with the 4th Division Ammunition Column. His service there was without significant incident, and he returned to Australia aboard the Frankfurt, disembarked at Melbourne on August 20th 1919 and was discharged on September 19th.
