Lennen John Trekardo was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and already serving as a soldier when he enlisted with the 59th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement on 16 January 1917 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on 16 July 1917. According to a medical report, Sgt Trekardo was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the thigh, suffering no disability. In his medical history report had suffered from disease including gonorrhoea and syphilis, dates ranging from 29 October 1918 to 6 August 1919. He returned home to Australia on 1 November 1919.
