Joseph Osborne was born in Newport, VIC and was a Farmer in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 21st Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 15 January 1917 at the age of 26. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 11 May 1917. He was admitted to hospital briefly for a sprained ankle on 14 August 1917 and in December he proceeded to France to reinforce the 21st Battalion. It seems he had some trouble with taken absence without leave and received a fine of 37 days' pay before being transferred to the 24th battalion where he remained until 16 August 1919, when he returned to Australia aboard the Mahia.
