Biography

Herbert Fielding Tweedie (SN 34994) born in Ballarat, was a 26 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 1st 1917. He embarked from Melbourne aboard the Port Sydney on November 9th and sailed to England. In June 1918 he reached the battlefields of France to serve with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade. A bout of pleurisy saw him hospitalised for a short time, but he avoided battle injuries until the fighting ceased. Ironically, two weeks after the Armistice was signed, he accidentally dislocated his left elbow. Consequently, he was returned home aboard the Margha, disembarked at Melbourne on March 4th 1919 and was discharged medically unfit on May 14th.

His cousin Forbes also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
