Biography

Patrick McInerney (SN 6859) first enlisted in May 1916 but was discharged three months later due to an unspecified civil conviction. He enlisted again on February 8th 1917, a married labourer declaring himself to be 44 years of age. Posted to the 21st Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ascanius on May 11th 1917 reaching England on July 20th . Just a month later he boarded the New Zealand Hospital Transport Pakeha for return to Australia due to the discovery that he was over 50 years of age. He reached Melbourne on October 22nd 1917 and was discharged on November 16th 1917 ‘overage’.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Patrick McInerny.
