Frank James Kennedy was born in Ballarat and was working as a Military Clerk when he enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, 19th Reinforcement as a Corporal on 8 March 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 11 May 1917, reaching England in July. He was posted as a military staff clerk at 5th Division Headquarters in London. In June 1918 he transferred to the 22nd Battalion HQ in France where he saw out the war.
