George Edward (also Edwards) Stevenson was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and was a Railway guard when he enlisted with the 11th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 13 March 1916 at the age of 41. His unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A28 Miltiades on 7 August 1916. Whilst overseas he married Ms Alice Summendinger on 8 April 1917. Aside from some slight illness resulting in hospital visits, he completed his tour of duty without significant incident, illness or injury.

According to documentation dated 12 December 1918 he was given approval to return to Australia as a medical case in order to accompany Alice, who had arranged passage on the same ship leaving the UK for Australia.
