His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. He sailed first to Egypt then in early April 1915 he moved to Mudros in preparation for the Gallipoli landing. On or about May 2nd he received serious bullet wounds to both legs and was evacuated to hospital back at Helipolis in Egypt. For a time he was on the dangerously ill list but gradually recovered, although he was still considered unfit for further active service and was returned to Australia on the Hororata.
