Biography

George Sydney Thomas Jarvis was born in Maryborough, VIC and was a Bootmaker by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, A Company on 1 October 1914 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. He sailed first to Egypt then in early April 1915 he moved to Mudros in preparation for the Gallipoli landing. On or about May 2nd he received serious bullet wounds to both legs and was evacuated to hospital back at Helipolis in Egypt. For a time he was on the dangerously ill list but gradually recovered, although he was still considered unfit for further active service and was returned to Australia on the Hororata. He disembarked at Melbourne on August 25th 1915 and was discharged soon after as æmedically unfit'.
