Biography

Edward James McCormick (SN 6929) was born at Allendale and was a 19 year old labourer when he enlisted at Ballarat on February 16th 1917. Assigned to the 21st Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne on May 11th and sailed to England aboard the Ascanius. While serving on the Western Front he was twice wounded, gassed, in March and July 1918. Suffering from severe laryngitis he returned to Australia on the Chemnitz, disembarked at Melbourne on September 5th 1919 and was discharged on October 5th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Edward J. McCormack.
