Alice Mary Hall was born 29 September 1889 at Geelong, Victoria to Alexander Charles Hall and Anna Georgina née Orr. At the time of her enlistment on 8 November 1917, the family were living at Piggoreet, 27 km south-west of Ballarat. Alice had spent 3 years as a trainee nurse at the Geelong Public Hospital and was already a member of the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) when she enlisted. As part of the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC), Staff Nurse Hall embarked on 26 November 1917 at Melbourne per “Indarra” bound for Bombay, India. On arrival at Bombay on 18 December 1917, Alice was posted for duty to the local Victoria War Hospital. On 28 April 1918 she was transferred for duty to the Station Hospital, Quetta where she remained until 7 October 1919. Now on staff with No.2 Sea Transport, Alice was transferred back to Bombay and embarked for Singapore on board Dunera, arriving there on 15 October 1919. A week later, she boarded Mataram and arrived in Melbourne on 13 November 1919 and was discharged on 26 March 1920.
Alice did not marry, died at Melbourne on 4 July 1947 and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery Nurse Alice Hall is honoured on the Piggoreet State School honour board, along with 40 district soldiers. Her brother Leslie Hall also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
