Biography

Charles Disney (SN 1185) born in Ballarat, was a 32 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Ballarat on October 1st 1914. On December 22nd he embarked for overseas service and sailed to Egypt. He saw action at Gallipoli with the 4th Machine Gun Company until a septic hand caused his evacuation. After Gallipoli he was moved to France in June 1916 and the following month he was charged with ‘being under the influence of drink, incapable of carrying out duties’. Both the National Archives and the Australian War Memorial record that he was awarded a Military Medal but neither provides any detail. He returned to Australia on transport duty aboard the Arawa, disembarked at Melbourne on November 17th 1918 and was discharged on January 17th 1919.
