Biography

Arthur Richards was born in Ballarat and was a Leather Worker by trade when he enlisted in the 23rd Battalion, 20th Reinforcement on 19 July 1917 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 21 November 1917. He embarked from Port Melbourne on November 21st on the Nestor as a reinforcement for the 23rd Battalion. In April 1918 he joined the 23rd Battalion in France and on May 20th was wounded in action. He suffered a severe gunshot wound to his left forearm and was evacuated to hospital in England. He did not return to the battle front but returned to Australia on the Morvada, disembarking at Melbourne on February 20th 1919.
