Biography

John Kay (SN 3411) born at Hamilton, was a 35 year old labourer when he first enlisted in Sydney on August 29th 1914. Assigned to the 1st Division Ammunition Column he embarked from Sydney aboard the Borda on December 22nd and sailed via Egypt to Gallipoli, arriving there on April 30th. He came through Gallipoli unscathed but back in Egypt in 1916 he spent several months in hospital suffering from pleurisy. Deemed unfit for active service he was returned to Australia on the Itonus. He disembarked at Sydney on July 13th 1916 and was discharged on September 12th. He re-enlisted in Ballarat (SN 33514) on February 22nd 1917 and embarked from Melbourne aboard the Shropshire on May 11th, as a reinforcement for the 25th Field Artillery Brigade. In England he was hospitalised suffering from tuberculosis until he was returned to Melbourne aboard the Karoola, and discharged as medically unfit on March 6th 1918.
