Charles Ernest Phillips (SN 7599) was born in Creswick where he attended the North Creswick State School. He was a blacksmith's striker, 18 years of age and single when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 7th 1917. He joined the 6th Infantry Battalion, embarking from Melbourne in August on board the Themistocles. He was posted to France in February 1918 but was hospitalised in March and evacuated to England after being gassed. He rejoined his unit in July but was killed in action at Lihons, less than three weeks later, on August 10th 1918. He has no known grave, so his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
