Biography

George William Cooper (SN 3374) born in India, was a married 41 year old mental hospital attendant when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 20th 1917. He embarked aboard the Suevic on June 21st and sailed to England. In December he was deployed to France where he joined the 57th Infantry Battalion. In August 1918 he was wounded in action, suffering a gunshot wound to his knee. He was evacuated to hospital and did not rejoin his unit before the Armistice was signed. He recovered from his knee wound but was troubled by illness until he returned to Australia aboard the Port Denison, disembarked at Melbourne on November 13th 1919 and was discharged soon after.
