Biography

Born at Buninyong, Richard Luke (SN 12340) was a single 20 year old confectioner at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne on July 17th 1915. He trained with the Australian Army Medical Corps at Ascot Vale before embarking from Melbourne aboard the Runic on June 20th, 1916. After some further training in England he crossed to the battlefields of France in November 1916 to serve with the 10th Field Ambulance. It seems he was lucky, coming through the war without major injury, illness, or incident. He returned to Australia after the war, aboard the Rio Pardo, disembarking at Melbourne on July 18th 1919. He was discharged in September but his service is remembered on the honour board of the Buninyong State School.
