Thomas Burns (SN 3207) born at Ballan, was a 24 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 21st 1914. He embarked aboard the Ulysses on December 22nd and sailed to Egypt. He trained then served in Egypt as a driver with the 3rd Field Company Engineers until he was moved to France in January 1917. He then served through the war without significant illness or injury. Granted special ‘1914 leave’, he returned to Australia aboard the Port Sydney, disembarked on December 2nd 1918 and was discharged on January 31st 1919.
