John Kildahl Richards was born in Ballarat, was single and a medical practitioner when he enlisted in the Medical Officers Unit on 16 April 1917 at the age of 50. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A67 Orsova on 10 November 1915. On 31 August 1917 he was assigned with the 14th Australian General Hospital where he served with the medical staff. In July 1918 he was hospitalised himself, suffering from dysentery, for about a month and was invalided to Australia aboard the Leicestershire in December 1918.
