John Leslie Baird (SN 18701) born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old civil servant when he enlisted in Melbourne on April 18th 1917. He trained with the Medical Corps at Bendigo before he embarked aboard the Nestor on November 21st and sailed to Egypt. In April 1918 he moved to France where he served with the 8th Field Ambulance. At the war’s end he returned to Australia as a member of the nursing staff aboard the Main, disembarked at Melbourne on October 11th 1919 and was discharged on November 10th. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number V357070.
