Biography

Hugh Alexander Sutherland was born in Maffra, VIC and was living in Ballarat as a Turner when he enlisted in the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 7 on 10 May 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 4 August 1917. In February 1918 he joined the 3rd Division Pioneer Battalion in France and served out the final year of the war. He returned to Australia on the Prinz Hubertus, disembarking at Melbourne on August 25th 1919.
