Biography

Francis Tierney was born in Ballarat East, Victoria, was single and a Farm Labourer when he enlisted with the 58th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement on 3 April 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on 16 July 1917. He proceeded overseas to France from Folkstone on 15 April 1918 and a month later joined with the 58th Battalion. Although his reports do not show he suffered any major illness, injury or incident, he was invalided to England on 31 January 1919 for ædebility'. He returned home to Australia aboard the Sulvic on 23 July 1919.
