Richard Berry (SN 752A) was just 18, a painter, when his parents Alf and Jane consented to his enlistment on April 23rd 1917. His brother George was in England recovering from a gunshot wound when Richard commenced his training at Broadmeadows. On October 30th 1917 he embarked on the Aeneas and in April 1918 he joined the 24th Battalion in France. In June that year he was wounded in action, suffering shrapnel wounds to the thigh and left arm. He was evacuated to the Norfolk Army Hospital in Norwich, England, and did not return to the line. On December 11th he departed England to return to Australia. He died on March 7th 1977 at the age of 77.
His brother George also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
