John Henry Waller (SN 1307) was born in Ballarat and attended the Urquhart Street State School. He was only 20 years old and employed as a driver when he enlisted on September 28th 1914. He embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Battalion on board the Clan Macgillivray in February 1915. Part of the first landings at Gallipoli, he was reported as missing on April 27th 1915. A Board of Inquiry in October confirmed that he had either been 'Killed or Prisoner of War' but it was not until September 1917, after enquiries from his father as high as the Minister of Defense, that a Court of Inquiry in Rouen finally confirmed that he had been killed in action. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli.
His twin brother Walter was killed in Egypt in January 1917 and his older brother George also served in the AIF. Both brothers are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
