Biography

Matthew Tierney was born in Ballarat East, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted with the 6th Battalion, 25th Reinforcement on 28 April 1917 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 4 August 1917. However, his service was cut short as it was discovered he had a deformed foot. He returned to Australia on 17 June 1918.
