Biography

Walter Monteith (SN 936A) was born in Bungaree and attended the Bullarook State School. He enlisted in Ballarat on March 15th 1916. He was 18 years old, single and a labourer. He was accepted into the 38th Infantry Battalion and departed from Melbourne on board the Runic in June. Once in England he was transferred to the 7th Infantry Battalion. He reached the battlefields in September 1916 and suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in February 1917. He rejoined his unit in August, but he was killed at Broodseinde, Belgium on October 4th 1917. He has no known grave, and his name is on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
