James Joseph Graham (SN 3429) born at Casterton, was a 37 year old married labourer when he first enlisted in Melbourne on March 28th 1916. Eight days later he was discharged ' medically unfit'. He then re- enlisted on April 23rd 1917. He embarked in October aboard the Kyarra and sailed to Egypt where he was posted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment. During his service there, through 1918, he avoided battle wounds but was troubled by asthma. He returned to Australia aboard the Aeneas, disembarked on February 5th 1919 and was discharged on February 28th.
