Born in Ascot, Victoria, James Long was a single 20 year old butcher at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 25th of April 1917. At 21 year old, he along with his unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board SS Indarra on the 26th of November 1917.
James returned to Australia on the 24th of November 1919 and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 24th of December 1919.
