Biography

James Long (SN 802) born in Ascot, was a 20 year old butcher when he enlisted in Ballarat on Anzac Day 1917. During his training he was disciplined for using threatening language to an NCO. He embarked aboard the Indarra on November 26th and sailed to England. He was transferred from the 8th Infantry Battalion to the 58th Battalion before being deployed to France in June 1918 attached to the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion. When the fighting ceased, he was transferred to the Australian Graves Registration Unit. He returned to Australia aboard the Pakeha, disembarked at Melbourne on November 24th1919 and was discharged on December 24th.
