Biography

William James Bale (SN 3348) from Humffray Street at Brown Hill attended the Brown Hill State School. He was a 20-year-old labourer at the time of his enlistment on May 28th 1917. He embarked from Sydney aboard the Port Melbourne to sail to England which he reached in mid-September. There he trained with the 15th Training Battalion until January 1918 when he joined the 38th Battalion in France. On September 29th, he sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was evacuated to hospital at Rouen. He died of his wounds a few days later on October 3rd 1918. He was 22 years of age and is buried at St. Sever Cemetery near Rouen. He is also remembered on the honour board of the Brown Hill State School.
