William Thompson Potter was born in Sebastopol and was a Postal Assistant when he enlisted in the Signal Engineers on 26 April 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board RMS Ormonde on 2 March 1918. He was admitted to hospital on 11 July 1918 for pyrexia (fever) and malaria. He returned to Australia aboard the Enripides on 15 March 1919.
