James William Hunter (SN 1148/1206) born at Smythesdale, was a 19 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on September 30th 1914. Assigned as a bugler with the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Themistocles on December 22nd. He suffered a wound to his arm at the Gallipoli landing on April 25th1915, was evacuated to hospital in Egypt but was able to rejoin his unit a month later. In September it was illness that forced his evacuation to Lemnos then Malta, where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He returned home aboard the Kanowna, disembarked at Melbourne and was discharged ‘medically unfit, chronic dysentery’ on September 6th 1916.
