Thomas Bourke (SN 128/1629/19986) born in Ballarat, was a 24 year old plumber when he first enlisted in the 13th Infantry Battalion with service number 128 but was discharged with no overseas service. He re-enlisted with service number 1629 on February 14th 1915 and embarked two weeks later but was returned from Egypt aboard the Ceramic due to venereal disease, disembarking on May 25th . He re-embarked on July 16th 1915 and saw action at Gallipoli with the Field Company Engineers but then suffered a fractured leg in France in April 1916. He was returned to Australia aboard the Marathon and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on November 17th 1916. He enlisted again with service number 19986 on June 21st 1917 and saw action in France with the 15th Field Company Engineers. He returned home on the Euripides, disembarked at Melbourne on October 20th 1919 and was discharged on November 19th.
