Biography

William John Reed was born in Ballarat and was a Baker by trade when he enlisted in the 24th Battalion, 20th Reinforcements on 8 August 1917 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 21 November 1917. In May 1918 he joined the 24th Battalion in France but in June he was transferred to the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion. Aside from a couple of bouts of tonsillitis he came through the war in good physical health. He returned home on the Bakara, disembarking at Melbourne on September 27th 1919.
