Born in Ballarat, Jack Reid Hughes was a single 20 year old dairyman when he enlisted on the 18th of September 1917. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 21st of November 1917.
He returned to Australia on the 27th of September 1919 and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 27th of October 1919.
