John (Jack) Reid Hughes (SN 6824A) born at Ballarat, was a 19 year old dairyman when he enlisted in Ballarat on September 9th 1917. On November 21st he embarked aboard the Nestor and reached England in January 1918. In April he crossed to France to serve with the 21st then 24th Battalions. In July 1918 he had a prolonged admission to Bulford Hospital but otherwise he avoided illness or injury. He returned home aboard the Bakara, disembarked on September 26th and was discharged a month later on October 27th 1919.
