Biography

George Ernest Sugget (SN 7555) was born at Ballarat and was a 38 year old painter when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 30th 1917. On August 4th he embarked aboard the Themistocles and sailed to Scotland, disembarking at Glasgow. In February 1918 he crossed to France to join the 5th Infantry Battalion. He suffered mild wounds to his head and thumb in August but otherwise safely managed the final months of the war. He returned to Australia on the Euripides, reaching Melbourne on October 20th 1919. He was discharged on November 19th 1919.

His brother Frank also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as George Suggett.
