Frederick Graham was born in Ballarat and was a Railway Porter by trade when he enlisted in the 29th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 14 August 1917 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1917. In May of that year he moved to France where he served with the 29th and 32nd Battalions. On July 19th he was wounded (gassed) and evacuated to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Rouen. He returned to duty three weeks later and safely saw out the remaining months of the war. He returned to Australia in August 1919.
