John Herbert Day (Lt.) born at Haddon, was a married 41 year old permanent soldier when he joined the 1st A.I.F. at the rank of lieutenant on September 3rd 1917. He embarked from Sydney aboard the Persic just three weeks later and sailed to England. After a short period on the instructional staff, he joined the 59th Infantry Battalion in France in September. He saw out the final months of the war but in early 1919 he was evacuated to hospital in England suffering from influenza and pneumonia. He returned to Australia aboard the Leicestershire, disembarked on June 21st 1919 and his appointment was terminated on March 25th 1920.
