Alexander Eyres Hunter was born in Mt Clear, VIC and was an Engineer by trade when he enlisted in the Engineering Field Companies, General Reinforcements on 6 September 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 22 March 1918. In October 1918, just a month before the end of the war, he crossed to France. After the war he returned home on the Barambah, disembarking at Melbourne on October 25th 1919.
