Robert Haniford Commons (SN 6789A) was born in Ballarat and educated at Pleasant Street State School and Ballarat College. He recorded his occupation as physicist at the time of his enlistment on September 13th 1917. He embarked from Melbourne on board the Nestor with the 24th Infantry Battalion in November. He arrived in France at the end of April but only three weeks later, on May 19th 1918, he was killed in action during the fighting at Ville-sur-Ancre in France. He was 29 years of age and is buried in the Ribemont Communal Cemetery, France.
