Biography

Alfred John Pilliner was born in Weymouth, England and was a Farmer from Ballarat East when he enlisted in the 4th Light Horse Regiment, 31st Reinforcement on 14 September 1917 at the age of 43. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1917. According to his records, aside from being admitted to hospital as sick on 30 July 1918, he was able to complete his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia aboard the Essex on 16 June 1919.
