David Carpenter (SN 50028) was born in Windermere and was a labourer when he enlisted in September 1917 at the age of 27. He trained at Broadmeadows then embarked from Sydney aboard the Persic. He was deployed to France to reinforce the 22nd Battalion in mid-October 1918, just three weeks before hostilities ceased. He returned to Australia on the Ulysses, disembarking on September 2nd 1919. He died in December 1975, aged 86.
His brother Stanley also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
