David Carpenter was born in Windermere, VIC and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat with the 1st General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 8 September 1917 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A34 Persic on 21 March 1918. He was deployed to France to reinforce the 22nd Battalion in mid-October 1918, just three weeks before hostilities ceased. He returned to Australia on the Ulysses, disembarking on September 2nd 1919.
