Charles Taylor was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Carpenter when he enlisted with the 38th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 10 October 1917 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1917. His term of service was short and according to his records he returned home to Australia for discharge due to 'mental deficiency'.
